Education system dar Amrika! ABSOLETE?!

January 17th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Blogger Kasra mikhast rajebe education system (high school) dar Amrika bishtar bedoone…hsstudentssmallcutout.jpgVakhte ezafe nabood dar barnameye Cit Talk, so I posted it as a blog!

The national results in international comparisons have often been below the average of developed countries. In OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment 2003, 15 year olds ranked 24th of 38 in mathematics, 19th of 38 in science, 12th of 38 in reading, and 26th of 38 in problem solving.[46] In addition, many business leaders have expressed concerns that the quality of education given in the US system is generally below acceptable standards, and should be adapted in order to conform to the needs of an evolving world. Bill Gates has famously stated that the American high school is “obsolete”.

The following are the typical minimum course sequences that one must take in order to obtain a high school diploma; they are not indicative of the necessary minimum courses or course rigor required for attending college in the United States:

  • Science (usually three years minimum, including biology, chemistry, physics)
  • Mathematics (usually three years minimum, including algebra, geometry, algebra II, and/or precalculus/trigonometry)
  • English (four years)
  • Social Science (various history, government, and economics courses, always including American history)
  • Physical education (at least one year)

Many states require a “health” course in which students learn about anatomy, nutrition, first aid, sexuality, and birth control. Anti-drug use programs are also usually part of health courses. Foreign language and some form of art education are also a mandatory part of the curriculum in some schools. (visit wikipedia.com for more info)

U.S education system is the best in the world, of course (unlike in Iran) they don’t want you to be a Leonhard Euler at 12th grade, I have friends they study in France, Germany, UK, Iran, Canada, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark. I can tell you there is no education system in the world that can offer the same flexibility and possibilities (transferring, evaluating your transcripts) changing fields (like going from IT to Health care) and financing than the U.S system, the racial discrimination in some European countries is another problem that you don’t see in USA, I remember a few cases in Europe specially in France where Persian(french citizen) students who wanted to apply for med school were denied even with great transcripts, the french board of education made them go through a special committee (which is full of old racist) and denied their application regardless of their academic performances , so if you take all these factors (and many others) into consideration it’s obvious that we have the best education system in the U.S . by the way Bill Gates a Harvard dropout who got his degree 30 yrs later because of his fame and reputation is not at all a reference in term of Education. instead of Bill Gates there are so many other guys that you could mention like Professor Yahya Rahmat Samii or Pierre Omidyar.. Ladan, I hope your special program about U.S education will be better than this comment on the blog.

Alireza your comment holds very strong points and I agree with it…but your comment was in respect to the University/post high school education system. But my blog was directed strictly to the high school system and nothing else. After high school there are SO many ways for people of ALL socio economic backgrounds, regardless of race or religion, to obtain degrees in pretty much ANYTHING. From community colleges to state colleges to universities (private and public)-even on-line courses! ….but, the high school system in America is suffering! A new act has been passed call “no child left behind” which will hopefully do something about this very important matter. I hope this cleared things up for you Alireza, and hopefully my program will dig deeper into this issue! Thanks! –Ladan

I don’t think the U.S is the only country suffering at this Level as you can see there are a lot of program like “no child left behind” in European countries Like Germany and France.. since 10,15 yrs and after all lets suppose that there is a country that has a better high school system than U.S (which I doubt) what is the point to have a perfect high school system when the rest of their higher education system is completely stodgy and disadvantageous ?honestly what can you do in 2008 with HS diploma beside accessing the higher education? by the way in which country you can find a GED program that people who dropped out of high school can pass 5 exams in a few month and get a official diploma which allows them to access higher education? which country has the most customizable secondary education system with all these different type of home schooling program, correspondence courses and all these college and universities offering online (Internet) high school diploma program and graduation? bottom line is the U.S education system is not suffering more than any where else but the reasons of these concerns are 1- some people who are too lazy or ignorant to take advantage fully from the system ! and also 2-some other wealthy people(like Bill Gates) who want to invent some ORIGINAL charity causes and be praised as Heroes ! some countries they don’t even have enough elementary schools like Zimbabwe and Afghanistan and many others that’s what I call ‘’suffering”!! I hope this cleared up for you. Thank you!

Alireza, I never said that the US is the only country suffering…however, considering America’s situation versus the life in Zimbabwe, there is little to no reason for the numbers in the US to be so low! The blog I posted about the education system was straight out of wikipedia.com–It is not my opinion or my words–so please keep that in mind. However, with that said, I’m really proud of your passionate stance and heartfelt comments! I still agree with everything you have written. However, I think you are reading into it too much. Blogger Kasra wanted information on US system, and ONLY the US system and I offered the minimum–without comparing or contrasting it with other countries or referencing scholars. The Bill Gates mention was from wikipedia.com. -Thank you again, Ladan

Going to school in U.S. is like being on an extended vacation. I’m sure that most people drop out because they are bored with what they are offered, and not because it’s too hard. No longer graduating HS, or even obtaining BS, offer you an edge in the job market, so why even waste your time. Major overhaul is needed, and lets stop blaming everything on lack of money, use creativity.
