A Milestone for Bebin.tv - 3rd Place in the Deutsche Welle

November 16th, 2007 · 5 Comments

We would like to thank all of our fans worldwide for having helped us achieve such high honors. Although we were very excited to have been picked as one of the top ten contenders for the 2007 Deutsche Welle Best of the Blogs competition, we never thought we’d end up in the top 3 spots. Bebin.tv ended up with 1% shy of the 2nd place spot. Thank you all again for making this a reality and we appreciate all the nice comments everyone left for us on the DW website.

Here is a link to the final results along with the comments.

Happy than bebin got recognition ….. hopefully next time you will be number ONE!

Having said that, I think bebin need to be more Iranian! Make more persian programs! Iranians who do not know English can not follow most of your mixed English/Persian programs. Please make videos for all Iranians from whatever background …. and whatever age group … religious and non-religious ….

I am sure your videos will find its way to the homes in Iran, to all small towns …. but for that you have to tune yourself with people there …. the biggest mistake is to expect Iranian mass to adjust themselves to American culture. I think you should avoid breaking taboos! That is not your job! There are far more qualified Iranian filmmakers out there that can do it much more efficient than you ….

    One last point:

I think Samira need to revise her way of making videos! Her works are fully in English. Why? I think this is a very good opportunity for her to learn Persian!! You can not expect other Iranian Americans to learn Persian while you yourself put no effort in this direction !!!

Iranian culture can not be reduced to Iranian food and some “fohsh e irani”! Being of Iranian culture is different from being of Iranian blood!

    Hi Mitra,

Thank you for your feedback. I’m not sure if you have seen all of our programs, we do have a tab for English and one for Persian, as we do try to produce programs that are for Persian speaking only audiences and others for a mixed English/Persian audience. We definitely have a large audience inside of Iran and we definitely intend our programs to be for all Iranians, not only those that speak English. There is a large number of Persian only programs. However, at the same time we acknowledge the fact that there are dozens of Iranian Media outlets who cater programs in Persian only and completely neglect the second generation Iranian audience (the young generation that has trouble with the Persian language and a bitter taste of Iranian media).
The reality is that there are many young Iranians outside of Iran who do not speak Persian fluently, but rather a mixture of their host language and Persian. We hope by providing some programs that speak directly those individual languages we can attract them to watch our other Persian programs as well and hopefully get exposed to more of Iranian culture.
This brings me to your next point, we do not believe Samira needs to revise her way of making videos and to do the shows in Persian, again for the same reasons stated above. Although I agree that we cannot expect other Persians to learn Persian if we do not ourselves put the effort into it, I have to say that first we’ve put a LOT of effort in delivering Persian programs, as evidenced by our large number of cultural shows (History in 60 Seconds, City Guides, and other programs including Art and Music) that are completely in Persian.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that Iranian culture can not be reduced to Iranian food and some “fohsh e irani”, but I don’t think what bebin.tv is all about. Based on your comments I’m not sure if you have had an opportunity to explore some of our programs.

Lastly, I agree with you that being of Iranian culture is different from being of Iranian blood, but let me add that the culture inside Iran today is not the same culture of Iran 100 years ago, and as new generations of Iranians are born a new Iranian cultural identity comes with that.
We’ve tried very hard to preserve what aspect of Iranian culture we can and I think people often forget that although we are all young Iranians born or raised outside of Iran from a young age, we all love our Iranian sides and are working within Iranian media as opposed to a non-Iranian media.

I hoped this helped explain some of your concerns, we always do take your feedback seriously and work very hard with the resources that we have to accommodate all our audiences.
