Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always noticed that Iranians always think that they know everything. We love to make fun of the Americans on TV when they don’t where their capital is.
So I asked myself, how smart are we Iranians? With a blank map (with no borders) I went out to find out the truth. The results were shocking!! More young Iranians could point out Iran on the map than older Iranians.
But I’m kind of relieved, because now I know that just like every other countries ,we aren’t perfect.

Wow…So many comments. This clip have stirred up more controversy than my “shomare bedam” :p
I agree with all of you, it is really a shame that more than 70% of the people we asked couldn’t find Iran on the map, it is even more embarrassing that the younger generation did a much better job than the older generation.
I saw this clip on Iranian.com yesterday and read the comments on their blog. I noticed that everybody was making fun of the fact that the people in this clip were from California. And they were calling these Californian-Iranians all kind of nasty names.
I think that’s wrong, I strongly believe that I would’ have gained the same results if I had conducted this experiment with Iranians in any other country outside Iran.
I’m so certain of this, that I’m going make a clip similar like this when I go to visit my family in Sweden, Stockholm this Christmas!

Finding some small countries in the middle of a continent with no obvious marks could be difficult.
But finding Iran should be easy between Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf.
Africa, Saudi Arabia, India, Persian Gulf and Caspian sea are all very obvious and clear landmarks (or sea marks!) and Iran can easily be located using them!!
So if an Iranian can not find it, then he or she must be really stupid!!!!

That was a good job that you have done; what I got was, we better be very careful of most of our people, why?. (Don’t make another mistake; how many people in our homeland can even recognize Iran on the map; I am not talking about Tehran, or other major cities.)
The problem is most of our people believe they “know”. (We can laugh or cry, that’s an option but can we something else about it?

Answer to Iraj!
I think any Iranian who had primary school education can recognize Iran on the map. The land mark is caspian sea! It is extremely simple to recognize. I have lived both in Tehran and several smaller cities and rural areas. You will be surprised to see how much those poor-looking and “low class Iranians” that you have in your mind know about the world.
Having said that: I think it is not fair to compare these rich Americans with some poor villagers in Iran whose everyday concern is whether they have food to eat the next day!!!
US and Europe based Iranians are the richest Iranian community in the world.

It’s realy a disaster. Most of our people who live in abroad know nothing about their identity. It’s not only a question of IRAN location in the world map, but also if you ask them about IRAN culture, music, art,..etc. they have nothing to tell you.

You shouldn’t take this as a good general example because these were american-iranians you were interviewing. You should do the same interview in tehran and then see the results

نشون میده چقدر آدم باهوشی هستی هرچند از متنهای سریال “دفتر” هم میشد به این نتیجه رسید ولی حالا دیگه مطمئن شدم .
فقط امیدوارم که بعد از صبحتت با این افراد ، ایران رو روی نقشه بهشون نشون داده باشی .
